Happy Halloween from my sneaky lil fox!

Happy Halloween!  Today is a big day for us over here.  Not only is it Halloween and Yuki’s first in preschool (meaning her first Halloween parade and party), but it’s the SF Giants Parade.  We won the World Series!  Again!  And this city goes craaaazy when it’s time to party!  It’s estimated that over a million people will gather to celebrate the win in our little city.  But I’m gonna miss the party to hang out with this little fox and her classmates.

When I made the Rain Cloud costume, I never thought it would be Yuki’s actual Halloween costume.  I was proved right when Yuki hated the costume and figured out within seconds how to rip it off (if you’re wondering, there was a lot of pleading and a bit of bribery during our photo shoot :)).  So I started a search for a new costume idea.  Since Yuki does not like hats, hoods, ears, tails, or anything bulky hanging off her, I felt pretty restricted in my choices.  I was trying to think of a costume that would require no more than regular clothes, but none of the ideas felt right or had any real meaning to her.

The fox idea was one of the firsts, but I quickly dismissed it because I knew Yuki would hate it.  She’s into the show “Dora the Explorer” and she loooooooves Swiper the Fox.  Swiper is the show’s villian.  He’s a sneaky little fox that shows up and swipes things from the other characters.  When she first started watching the show, she was totally scared of Swiper and she’d even cry a little when he came around.  But soon she couldn’t stop talking about him.  She’d take things and hide it behind her back and say, “Swiper took it!”  I think it was part of her alter ego.  She would sometimes refer to herself as Swiper and also giggle and say, “sneaky fox!!”  Pretty funny kid, that Yuki.

Anyways, after considering dozens of other options, my partner, Hideko, persuaded me to go for the fox outfit because it suits her so well.  I decided not to make a Swiper costume, but just a regular ol fox.  I have to say, I’m pretty pleased with how it came out!

The costume is pretty similar to the Totoro costume I made last year in terms of construction.  In fact, I used that costume to make the pattern for this one since it was the perfect size.  I used sweatshirt knit which is soft inside and warm, but not quite as much as fleece.  Unfortunately, it barely has any stretch which I thought was weird, but it still works.  The white fabric is also sweatshirt knit, but I sewed it on with the wrong side out so it’d be soft and fuzzy.

I moved the zipper to the front so I could attach the hood to the back and narrowed the wrists and ankles.  I added visible pockets to the front.  I wanted deep pockets for all the things Yuki would swipe (usually just rocks) and decided to make them contrasting for a fun visual look.

I added a little fox paw print to her booty, just for fun too.  All the details are just top stitched on.  Gotta love that knit doesn’t unravel!

So does she love it?  No.  I still have to struggle with her a bit to put it on and she definitely does not like the hood on (again, this photo shoot involved pleading and lots of treats!).  But I think she likes being a fox and she also gets excited when she sees other kids in costume.

Today will be the real test.  First her school Halloween Parade and then her first time really going trick-or-treating tonight!  Let’s see how much loot this fox comes away with!  Most of it is going to be mine anyways 🙂

Big festivities for you tonight?  Finish your costumes in time?  If you’ve made costumes for any of your kiddos, be sure to link it up at the Project Run & Play costume link up party and check out tons of other cute costumes!

Happy Halloween to you and your family!  And GOOOOOOO GIANTS!!!

  1. Such a darling costume! I don’t have anyone to dress up, but my partner in crime, Susi, did a great Word Girl costume for her little one. I think you are probably smart choosing the preschool party over the Giants on, it’s going to be a zoo!

  2. i LOVE LOVE LOVE this Cherie!! again, you inspire me to want to sew! can’t wait to someday have a little one of my own to make things for 🙂 and of course, foxes have special meaning to me too because of our kitsune. so basically, you’re TWO for TWO with costume ideas! my favorite cartoon and one of my favorite animals!!

happy halloween to you, hideko, and yuki!! i hope you have a great time at yuki’s first halloween parade and trick-or-treating tonight!! cutest age for sure!!

    • Thanks Mika!! I want you to sew so badly – I just know you’d rock at it because I already know how talented you are and I LOVE your style, so I’m sure you’d make the cutest and most gorgeous things. I swear, if I lived closer to you, I’d come over to your place and bust out that sewing machine so you could get started! It’s not hard, once you start, I swear!

  3. So adorable. You could put a paper bag on Yuki and she’d make everyone swoon, so I extra-admire the amazing details that you put into the things you make. This is really cool I kinda want one. Happy Halloween!

  4. Agree with Delia – it’s freakin’ aDORable and you never know, if you leave it hanging in her room Yuki might just grab it one day and ask to put it on. Em has been so-so on a few things I’ve made. If I just leave them out for her to find, sometimes she comes back to them with a vengeance (her purple wedding dress being the best example – she ignored it for MONTHS then suddenly wanted to wear it morning, noon and night! so weird). Maybe all she needs are some purple gloves and mask! 😉

    • Thanks Kristin, that’s good to keep in mind!! If not for this costume, maybe for other things I make. Oh, and if I thought she’d actually wear gloves or a mask, I’d totally do it 🙂

  5. This is amazing! Yah… Lala does not care for her Totoro costume (pics coming your way, soon). She loves to hug it and carry it everywhere, but not wear it. *sigh* Yup… thank goodness her cuteness is her saving grace. 😉

  6. well, you’ve done it again cherie…and soooo well! your sweet child makes a sweet fox, not at all cunning and sneaky, like the ones around our hen house! yes, we have foxes in the city. i made all my children’s costumes from scratch also, but they weren’t quite as finely detailed as yours. you continue to amaze me, and i love the stories that accompany your instructions. keep it up, almost-famous-friend!

  7. This is sooooooo adorable, you’ve done an amazing job again. Rowan won’t wear hoods at all either – just pulls them off or screams until I do. If only she knew how cute she looks in it.

    • Thanks Laura!! Yes, Yuki HATES hats and hoods and does the same thing – pulls it off or pulls at it and starts crying. Any picture you see with a hat or hood on, you can bet there was some sort of deal made (“just 2 more pictures and I’ll give you a treat!”). Oy. I guess I should just learn my lesson and avoid them altogether.

  9. I have been on the search for a fox outfit for my daughter for this Halloween. She will be about 9 months. I love your fox outfit and wondered if you ever sell them. If not, would it be possible to get more details about how you did it?

    • I don’t sell any costumes right now. I’m not sure what kind of details I can help you with, but feel free to email me any specific questions. I usually start off with a pair of one-piece fleece pajamas and use that for the general shape and size. Then I make adjustments from there.

  10. I love this costume. Do you have a pattern to sell? Where did you purchase the fabric? I am thinking ahead for my little guy. He does not like anything on his head either but I think this costume is even so cute with the hood hanging down! What a wonderful job you did! Hope to hear back.

    • Thanks! I don’t have a pattern for this costume, I’m sorry. I bought the fabric at Joann’s. It’s a sweatshirt knit and I got pretty lucky, there wasn’t much to choose from and I barely had enough to make this costume. I bet you could find it online too though.

  11. i love this cherie. Eversince last year i’ve been inspired of your work esp the Totoro, that was my fave! I will try to make a similar fox/wolf for my son’s second halloween, i have a feeling it wont turn out beautiful as yours lol. Good luck on your delivery Cherie!

  12. I am in love with this costume! You did an amazing job! Would you be interested in selling this costume to me? If so, how much would you be willing to sell it for? Hope to hear back soon!

    • I tried emailing you but the email was bounced back. Feel free to email me if you’re still interested. You can find my email address in the “contact” section. Thanks!

  14. I just made the costume! I use a toddler woodland animal pattern I found online and used your for fabric and details as inspiration. I didn’t do the pockets though. 😦 I’m just not that good at modifying patterns yet. My son absolutely loves it! Thank you. I can’t wait for Halloween.

  16. Is there any way we can purchase this costume? My son is 2 & 1/2 and it would be perfect for him!! Now that I’ve seen this fox costume, I won’t settle for less! Absolutely precious!

  17. I simply adore this costume and would love to use it as inspiration for my will-be-21-month-old-at-Halloween’s costume. Unfortunately I’m not super crafty and will be enlisting help from Grandma. Do you have a pattern or guide I can use?! Thank you so much in advance!!
